It really is amazing how fast spare parts and tools accumulate in this hobby. Now I just toss the split roll pins in a spare parts bin, and substitute the stainless pins as needed. I even got some heavy duty pins for the extractor, just in case. I didn't like the light duty option, so I ordered an assortment of standard duty stainless steel pins. There is at least one person selling them in small quantities on eBay, but he's using the light duty stainless steel coiled spring pins. They go in so much smoother it's unbelievable! The only downside is that they're not as strong as the split roll pins, but the odds of shearing one off would be astronomically low. The biggest improvement for me was switching from split roll pins to coiled spring pins. The only thing I don't like is that the rubber sleeve also covers the head of the punch, so it feels soft and spongy when tapping on it with a mallet. It's flat on one side to clear the receiver, and has a rubber sleeve to prevent scratching.
PIN PUNCH HOME DEPOT INSTALL
I've had good luck with the Wheeler Engineering Bolt Catch Install Kit. Anyone have any good sources? Amazon is always helpful as I have prime, but I'll go elsewhere. I'm not looking to spend $150 for a 9 piece snap-on set, but I don't want something that will bend and break when using a 3/32 punch or some crap like that.
Harbor Freight (cheap crap, but they warranty their tools and I can always return if they break for tiny job like this) only carries regular punches, not roll pin punches either. online nets me a million no name sets for $10-$25, but again. Not to mention they all seem to be from weird brands like "Tekton" or whatnot.
PIN PUNCH HOME DEPOT PROFESSIONAL
Our industry-leading businesses provide a broad range of products, services and solutions to professional customers in the maintenance, repair and operations (MRO), infrastructure, and non-residential and residential construction markets. Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, Sears, etc and NO ONE carries roll pin punches or starter punches in town. HD Supply is one of the largest industrial distributors in North America. Does anyone have a good source for decent roll pin punches and starter punches? I've always used the "lazy" man's method of tape covered channel locks to drive in the pins for my lower, but figured with as many builds as I'm doing over the years I might as well check out a set.
